UK’s WiFi market is all set to see some major growth in the next five years. Under the terms of a mutual agreement between BT and ATM provider Cashbox, the latter’s ATMs will see a radical conversion in which they’re to be transformed from mere money-churning machines into internet providers known as Openzone hotspots.
The absence of bank ATMs in some less developed places across the UK has been filled by more than 2,000 automated pay-and-use cash machines run by Cashbox. Now these same ATMs will play the dual role of cash withdrawal centres and points for mobile internet access. What’s mobile internet all about I hear you ask?… A dedicated mobile broadband website can answer all your questions and allay any fears.
The upgrade programme will begin with ten Cashbox ATMs, and if things go well, more ATMs will be converted into WiFi hotspots. The Tiger Tiger nightclubs in London and Manchester are among the first locations to undergo the upgrade.
Cashbox CEO Ciaran Morton said that some public locations where Cashbox’s ATMs are installed are better suited to become points of internet access. He added that as far as the finances are concerned, BT will be giving Cashbox a certain percentage of revenue that will be figured out on the basis of minutes used per site.
iPass, O2 iPhone, and Boingo subscribers will also be able to avail the benefits of Openzone hotspots along with BT broadband customers.
